Fort Myers, May 20, 2022
The FGCDL FC women’s team is playing their opening game of the 2022 season tomorrow (May 21) vs Miami United FC. Kick off is at 7pm at Paradise Coast Sports Complex in Naples.
Besides McKenna Sullivan returning from last year, the team is completely new and has a great mix of local talents, experienced college players and several players that played in the Premier League in Holland and Belgium. The team had two weeks of training and is looking to get off to a good start in the WPSL Sunshine Conference.
Ashlee Bakaitis commented on the upcoming game: “I am looking forward to a competitive opening day match against Miami tomorrow. We have a lot of talent on this Dutch Lions FC team, and I think everyone is eager to play. Hopefully we’ll come away with an early win. Preseason has been good, but nothing compares to game-time experience.”
Karaline Gray had this to say on the first 2 weeks: “We have had a good first two weeks of training. We have been able to get comfortable and understand each other. Overall I think we are just excited to get onto the pitch together and put it into action.”
Coach Chris Columbo added to that by saying: “For me, soccer provides so many emotions every day. We like to see grit, inspiration and stamina from the girls and that is exactly what these girls are made of. I can’t wait to see that in our opening game.”
The Lions are playing all their home games this season at Paradise Coast Sports Complex in Naples. There is no entrance fee for the games.
