FGCDL FC Women’s Team in 1st place after 2-1 win over Boca Blast

Cape Coral, June 19- Our Florida Gulf Coast Dutch Lions FC Women's Team is now in 1st place after their 2-1 win over Boca Blast last Sunday.

Florida Gulf Coast Dutch Lions Semi-Pro Women’s Team have secured the top spot in the Sunshine conference of the Women’s Premier Soccer League after a 2-1 win over Boca Blast this past Sunday. On a hot and humid Father’s Day in Southwest Florida, the Dutch Lions played an intense game against Boca Blast out of Miami. Tensions were high as both teams played aggressively while each looked for the perfect chance to score. Boca Blast had the first chance with a goal at minute 20 after a breakaway from one of their forwards. The ball sailed past goalie, Casey Winn.

The Dutch Lions answered back at minute 25 when they capitalized on a free kick taken by Marianna Scine. The beautiful pass was sent straight to Zoey Spitzer’s head, who flawlessly knocked it in the net to secure the tie at 1-1. Our fans were on their feet cheering!

Going into the second half the Dutch Lions knew they had to play their game and create more opportunities to score if they wanted to win. Using the momentum from their last goal and playing with heart, the Dutch Lions were able to convert on a play in the corner of Boca’s half. A few passes and blocks put the ball on the left foot of forward, Yvonne Ploeg, who easily found the back of the net. The Dutch Lions defended their lead until the ref blew the final whistle.

Goalie Casey Winn had a phenomenal game, making many big saves including a penalty shot from Boca Blast after Dutch Lions defender, Taylor Griffin, got a yellow card in the box. With this win, the Dutch Lions have secured first place in the sunshine conference of the WPSL. Head Coach Vincent de Weger says, “It was another difficult and close game, but I’m proud of these girls for working hard and getting those three points. We were looking for first place and we’ve got it. Now we look forward to winning against another good team this weekend.”

The Florida Gulf Coast Dutch Lions will host their last home game of the season against the Florida Sol this Sunday, June 24, at North Fort Myers Community Park. Kickoff is at 3pm with tailgating activities starting at 1pm, as well as a charity soccer game to raise donations for Dutch Lions youth player, Zoe Pitko, who was recently diagnosed with Fanconi anemia. Admission is free for this game.
