Orlando, June 12- Our Florida Gulf Coast Dutch Lions picked up 3 points against Florida Krush this past weekend. After a great goal by attacker, Silvana Gordon, our Women's Team won with a score of 1-0 and got their first Women's Team away victory in franchise history.
The game started with difficult circumstances because of the blistering heat and the poor field conditions. The Dutch Lions managed to keep possession and create some chances. Shots from Vesna Veltrop and Kara Kyramarios went wide, and Silvana Gordon tried her luck at a one on one attempt against the Krush goalie but was unsuccessful. After a lightning delay of 50 minutes, our Women's Team dominated until halftime. Forward, Marissa Stovring thought she scored off a header but the ball was saved on the goal line by the Krush defense. The domination resulted in a beautiful team goal by Silvana Gordon. Kara pushed the midfield up and pressured their defense in the corner of their own half. The goalkeeper tried to reach their left defender, but Silvana was there earlier and put it in the empty goal.
At halftime, the Dutch Lions led by 1-0. In the second half, the girls continued the pressure, but they couldn't keep possession because the Florida Krush was pressing hard. This resulted in a chance for their striker but goalie Casey Winn made a great save and picked up the corner afterward. After the last water break, the Dutch Lions still only had one goal. They wanted to see a score of 2-0, but keep the clean sheet. Unfortunately, Florida Krush received a PK after a tackle in the box by Marissa Stovring. Luckily for our Women's Team, Florida Krush missed their PK. This was also one of the last dangerous moments for goalie Casey Winn.
Our Florida Gulf Coast Dutch Lions Women's Team won their game with a score of 1-0 and are now 2-0-1 in the WPSL. With 6 points and 3 games the Dutch Lions are currently 2nd in the Sunshine Conference of the WPSL.
Head Coach Vincent de Weger is pleased with this away victory: "Away games are always difficult and we saw that with this game again. I am happy that we left with a score of 1-0 out that was the result of hard teamwork. Defense starts on top and we showed that the first 75 minutes. We have to work on closing the game, but I am extremely happy that we got the 3 points."
Our Women's Team plays at North Fort Myers Community Park this coming Sunday, June 17, at 2pm vs Boca Blast. Fathers get free entrance and admission for everyone else is only $5.
